The Defries Gardens include a new culinary garden and the established calendar garden. Beth Defries, an avid gardener who grew many fruits, vegetables, and flowers, originally owned and lived on the property before donating it to the Elkhart County Parks Dept. While the calendar garden is made up of a wide variety of trees, bushes, and flowering plants, the culinary garden includes perennial and annual crops and is used to demonstrate possibilities for locally grown food. Jon Cutrell and Jeff Martin are working on building raised beds and fences for the culinary garden as well as building the soil and planting some perennial and annual crops. Pam Peterson also works on maintenance of both the calendar and culinary gardens.
